President’s Letter:
Habits
And The Moon
by Sandra Williams
Recently I was reading a book about creating characters in a novel and what motivates them to step out and move in new directions, get out of their known world. One of the comments really struck me. The author said “Peopleare creatures of habit. Unless something comes along to knock them off course, they don’t change much or do anything out of the ordinary. The point of stasis provides a very strong inertia.”
That got me to thinking about how that point of stasis might be shown in a chart. Our habit patterns. Our point of inertia where we are quite comfortable, thank you, and you are going to have to use dynamite to move us out of our little orbit. (As astrology, we know that dynamite abounds, of course, and it materializes in the form of outer planets, especially Saturn, Pluto, and
Uranus!
So, of course, I go immediately to the Moon.. It rules our habits, and in Vedic astrology it also rules the mind. I look at which house it is in, the sign and the pattern of aspects. Also, very important: what planet disposits it and the condition of that
planet.
It makes for some very interesting reading! You might try it on your own. It challenges me to concoct charts for characters I plan to write about. . . and I already have the face to match the personality. So let’s play with
it.
Some famous people with interesting Moons very apropos to the theme of mental habit
patterns:
Billy Graham, Moon in Sag (sign of priests, religion etc) closely conjunct Mars (one’s energy and drive) in the ninth, (house of higher mind, religion, philosophy) Dispositor: Jupiter in exaltation in nurturing Cancer in the fourth, closely trine Sun and Venus in Scorpio at the 8th House cusp (great for mass appeal). Could he have done anything else in his life?
Bill Clinton: Moon in sensual Taurus in the 8th (house of sex, regeneration, shared resources -- need I say more?) inconjunct Jupiter (the expander) in the 1st, square his Leo Sun in the 12th
Dispositor: Venus in relationship-oriented Libra, conjunct wounded-healer Chiron in the first. (Also note, asteroid guru, Martha Lang-Wescott, calls Chiron, “the place where we don’t meet other’s expectations . . .a point of
rebellion.”)

Hillary Clinton: Moon in ambitious, compassionate Pisces in the 4th, (I’ve always read that Pisces Moons love the world, not just one person) inconjunct traditional Leo Saturn in the 9th, (inconjunct is sometimes called the dilemma, neither end gives you exactly what you want and they seem to be mutually exclusive) very close trine to Scorpio Mercury conjunct the Asc.* (known to be mentally brilliant - mind like a steel trap – part of her identity), square the suddenly changeable, erratic Uranus in wide-ranging Gemini in the 8th of shared resources. Dispositor: Neptune in Libra in the 11th sextile the powerful conjunction of Mars/Pluto in the 9th and semisextile Chiron in the 12th. (interesting to remember that Dane Rudhyar called the eleventh house the place of visions, of seeding a greater future, and the ninth is one’s philosophy of
life.)
Note: Kepler has Hillary’s birth time as 8:00 PM, but there is considerable question as to whether it is am or pm. Her personal secretary said it was AM. I tend to believe that is more correct -- because it gives her an extroverted chart with most of the planets above the horizon, relentless Scorpio rising (versus sociable, flitting Gemini?) and a loaded 12th house, including Mercury within minutes of the Ascendant. The PM time puts most of her planets below the horizon with the Moon the most elevated in the 9th conjunct the
MC.

And last, billionaire Bill Gates, mastermind, monopoly-prone, take-no-prisoners CEO/owner of Microsoft. Multi-aspected Moon in warrior Aries- closely conjunct the MC,- opposing Mars in Libra in the fourth -inconjunct the Sun in Scorpio (ruled by ruthless Pluto and co ruler is warrior Mars) and trine Uranus (ruler of all things electronic as well as invention/inspiration) in me-first Leo in the first house (how one defines oneself). Dispositor: Mars in cool, legalistic Libra – and Mars is disposited by vengeful, relentless Venus in Scorpio (in fall) conjunct cold, authoritarian, exacting Saturn (not exactly a warm friendly sort of fellow…known to be absolutely ruthless in
business).
It’s also interesting to note Bill has Jupiter closely conjunct Pluto in the second house of values and money. Pluto = power and obsession, closely tied to Jupiter, the expander and one’s philosophy, both in the personal sign of Leo, which at it’s worst is egocentric and holds a sense of entitlement. At it’s best is expansive, generous and loves children To his credit, he is now reaching into the more benefic qualities of powerful Jupiter/Pluto in Leo, using some of his financial power for the good of children
worldwide
An interesting aspect to look for (which is rather obscure but I believe can be quite important to understanding people who have it) is an angle of 165 degrees from the Moon. That’s 15 degrees short of an opposition. It has been called the angle of obsession. It can show unconscious mental habits of obsessing about things.
I’d tell you about my Moon, but mine is in Scorpio, and there’s something about Scorpio which is rather reluctant to tell all, you know what I mean? I will say that it is in fall and disposited by Pluto square Mercury and conjunct the North Node. Also, the traditional ruler is Mars which is in Cancer in my chart, also in fall, and in mutual reception with the
Moon. Not pretty, huh!
The good news is we can change (one of the reasons to study astrology), but only if we really want to and are willing to seriously work at it. Otherwise, it’s back to the
dynamite.
So where is your Moon, and how do you do habits? I’d love feedback from any of you about your own or other’s Moons that add insights to this study.
* You know strong Scorpio doesn’t give up easily. I have a friend, a Scorpio with Scorpio rising, who talks about her husband of 30 years with both exasperation and humor. He’s a neurotic hypochondriac, a total worry-wart, and frustrates her no end -- but she’s not about to give him up (as in divorce) because “I’ve spent way too many years training him. Why would I let some other woman be the beneficiary of all that hard work?” Might help explain Hillary’s choices as well. . . is Bill trainable?
